The strategic location of the Taj Mahal is perhaps what makes it wonderful sight. Its location on the bank of the river Yamuna in Agra, India, is what gives it different colours at different times of the day and on moonlit nights. Shah Jahan, the Mughal emperor, built the Taj Mahal as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Agra was the capital of the Mughal Empire during the reign of Shah Jahan and perhaps that's why he chose Agra to built the Taj. Built in white marble, the Taj Mahal is flanked by four minarets and mosques on each side. The four gardens in front of the Taj are divided by four waterways that meet in a pool at the centre.

The site of the Taj Mahal is such that one can see the Agra Red Fort from the Taj. During his last days, Shah Jahan died watching his masterpiece from the Agra Fort where he was imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb.
